Questions to ask a vehicle radio installer
Print this or keep it on your phone when you call shops from our state directory.
- Do you install customer-supplied radios, or only gear you sell?
- Have you installed this radio (or brand) before? In my vehicle model?
- Will you program the radio, or only install it? (Some shops install but don't program — e.g. Modern Diesel says so plainly: source.)
- Where would you mount the antenna, and why? (NMO, mag, fender, rack — see mount guide.)
- How do you terminate coax? (Correct crimp dies or solder.)
- Where will power come from, and how is it fused? (See power wiring.)
- Will you check SWR after the install?
- Where will the control head, mic hanger and speaker go?
- Will any trim, headliner or seats be removed?
- Is labor warrantied, and for how long? (Action Fleet in Minnesota, for example, advertises a lifetime labor warranty: source.)
- What's the written quote, and how long will the vehicle be in the shop?
- Can you help with FCC licensing? (Some shops, such as Mobile Radio Engineering, offer this.)
Fleet and public-safety shops are often the most experienced RF installers, but call to confirm they take personal vehicles.
